“The sages of ancient times emphasized not the treatment of diseases, rather the prevention of its occurrence. To administer medicine to a disease … is comparable to the behavior of one who begins to dig a well after he has become thirsty…… Would these actions not be too late?”
– Su Wen, Yellow Emperor’s Classics
Weekend One -Introduction to Chinese Medicine & Taoism
Chinese herbal medicine is governed by the universal principles of balance and harmony expressed in The Tao. This weekend includes an overview of the history of Chinese Medicine and begins to familiarize students with the basic terms and concepts: Five Element Theory, “Qi “ (pronounced chee) and the immune system, six divisions of Yin and Yang, four causes of disease, TCM terminology, energetic imbalances and meridians. Also, discussion of Classical Chinese.
Weekend #2 - Diagnosis & the Six Healing Sounds
Herbology is the core of treatment in Chinese medicine, and energetically, practitioners look beyond the symptoms of the disease to alleviate the underlying imbalance that caused the disease. Imbalances are determined by a non-invasive diagnostic system that includes tongue reading, pulse reading, facial observations and health history evaluation. Students will gain a working familiarity with meridians and diagnostic points during a full-day hands-on workshop on Sunday. You will be introduced to the Six-Healing Sounds to clear negative emotions.
Weekend #3 - The Five Element Diet – Food As Medicine
Plant medicine predates written human history as an approach to healing using herbs and foods to prevent and assist in the healing of various health conditions. Balance in a diet is unique for each person, and there is no one diet for everyone. Learn how to use whole foods “as medicine” to balance and regenerate internal organs and strengthen the immune system to help prevent disease. The Taoist way and the healing properties of whole foods, essentials of nutrition, food energetics, dietary guidelines, elimination diets, five-phase cooking and specific foods for organ imbalances.
Weekend #4 - Medicine Making & Recipes for Health: A Cooking Class
Hands-on cooking class. We will be cooking together common recipes that have been used for centuries to enhance the immune system, relieve allergies, address chronic health conditions, support detoxification, and maintain overall health. In addition, we will look at the healing properties of common herbs, foods and medicinal mushrooms used for centuries to address chronic health conditions, support detoxification and maintain overall health. Topics discussed will include how to incorporate healthy foods and herbs into your diet.
Weekend #6 - Student Clinic & Case Studies
All of your studies will be applied in the hands-on application and the principles and practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We will invite friends and family to our student clinic. We will assess each person using differential diagnosis, pulse, tongue and an extensive questionnaire to assess their health condition, emphasizing health history, and then making practical herbal, food and exercise recommendations. There will be a small group discussion of each case study.
Weekend #6 - How to Run a Successful Practice & Graduation
In this workshop we will be discussing how to run a successful practice. Topics discussed will be online marketing, social media, building your brand, creating a website, how to create successful wellness groups, classes and more!

"The class is truly a wealth of information. Both Drew and Anton are extremely knowledgeable and masters in their fields. They are both willing to share that knowledge with their students and patiently guide us as we learn to grasp new concepts, principles, and strategies. Given the complexity of TCM, especially when you first begin to learn it, Prof. Drew is always so thorough and patient, and breaks down complex concepts and strategies into simple, digestible terms and examples – it's such an awesome feeling when it clicks! Anton gives us the amazing gift of movement and Tai Chi / Qi Gong to incorporate as a vital healing modality into the herbs and nutrition practice. It's been an amazing journey so far, and I'm so thankful to have found this course."
